nerdy muna.
read this from Farnsworth's Econometrics in R:
"R is much more more flexible than most software used by econometricians because it is a modern mathe-
matical programming language, not just a program that does regressions and tests."

shempre hindi ko maiwasang mag-"yeeeeeeeeeah!!"

A: so ano na'ng ipapangalan natin kay Mo?
B: the fourth
A: eh pano yun kung lalaki yung susunod natin, e di dapat the fifth?
B: hindi, the eighth. byte ang nickname.
A *pabulong, nagrereview ng exponents* : two to the one... two squared... two cubed...
A *gulat, hindi na pabulong*: dakila byte?
A & B: wahahaha!

came across this blog entry which shows an easter egg made in mathematica. cool huh?
and because i couldn't stop bloghopping, i came across these math blogs:
walking randomly and ramblings of a math mom.
hey, i even came across kakuro (not related to sudoku nor sadako), a math puzzle which can reinforce a kid's addition and multiplication skills.

oh, btw. happy easter everyone! happy egg! :-P

may binabasa akong financial math book at sabi ng libro,
Assumption 1.6 (No-Arbitrage Principle)
There is no admissible portfolio with initial value V(0) = 0 such that V(1) > 0
with non-zero probability.

where V(t) is the wealth of an investor (value of a portfolio) at time t. ibig sabihin lang, the market does not allow risk-free profits with no initial investments.

i paused, digesting this concept, when the harsh tagalog translation hit me: HINDI KA PWEDENG YUMAMAN KUNG WALA KANG PERA.

awwww....

came across this article about pi fans and how they celebrate pi day, which happens to be today, 3-14.

was also surprised to know that there are people who actually know the digits of pi up to 100,000 digits (wow, bri, talo ka) and that there are people who actually write poetry that shows the digits of pi - the length of a word corresponds to a digit.

if you can remember the poem — which riffs on T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," Act V of "Hamlet" and Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," among other texts — you too can recite pi.

"One: A Poem: A Raven," it begins (3-1-4-1-5). "Midnights so dreary, tired and weary, silently pondering volumes extolling all by-now obsolete lore. During my rather long nap — the weirdest tap! An ominous vibrating sound disturbing my chamber's antedoor." And so on.

*whew* happy pi day!

i read this philippine idol news from inq7 a few days ago:

We were also intrigued, because we had been informed that the final confrontation’s vote count was going to be a very close call, with the winner garnering only 1.42 percent more votes than the second-placer.
The more detailed info was that the winner had gotten 36.26 percent of the text-votes, the runner-up garnered 33.84 percent, and the third placer got a still respectable 30.90 percent.

but i didn't have any questions then. probably too joyful of mau's victory. hehehe. i watched this philippine idol final results video on youtube today

thanks to jrpjnoyako08 for the video

and my delayed reaction was, "36.26 minus 33.84.... pano naging 1.42 yun?"

at teka, icheck natin: 36.26 + 33.84 + 30.90... magiging 100% kaya? hehehe. magcalculator pa kayo, the sum is 101. yezz. 101%... philippine idol results pa lang yan. pano kaya kung philippine elections na, ganyan din kaya ang math?

nuninu...

hindi ko siya naging teacher noong undergrad ako. lalo naman noong masters kasi actuarial subjects ang tinuturo niya. a quick google search informed me that she taught at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia after her teaching stint at the UP Diliman Math Department.

(i remember her acknowledging her husband's presence then saying 'shy' daw yung husband niya... 'shy tagaluto, shy tagalaba...') ;-)

while reviewing (yes kids, i did try my best to study) for my math exam, i panicked because i have forgotten how to tell if a series is convergent or divergent. come on, that was math around (shet, panic! is it really that looooong already?) nine or ten years ago... and i didn't get to teach that topic too, so naturally, i've forgotten all about it.

i got my math 64 and 65 notes (they're in one notebook and i couldn't even tell where one subject ended and the other one began). gah. i had to scan each and every page to look for the topic on convergence. of course, a feeling of nostalgia hit me. it was really cool to draw limacons, petal curves and lemniscates (yes kids, those cute things are based on equations) and hyperbolic cylinders and my favorite nice-to-draw figure, hyperbolic paraboloids. hahaha. trivia from wikipedia: A daily life example of a hyperbolic paraboloid is the shape of a Pringles potato chip. yummeh!

quotable quotes from some of my professors are scattered on the margins of my notebook. and because i feel like sharing today, uh.. i will share. doh.
